PETER GRIGGS
AT MEDALLION
The Medallion Opera House
will host internationally known
guitarist Peter Griggs in a concert, “The Guitar in America,” on
Friday, October 14, 2016 at 7:30
p.m. In this program, Griggs
traces the history of the guitar in
the United States, performing
traditional country dances, folk
songs, blues, ragtime, jazz, and
several of Griggs’ own compositions. A vocalist as well as an
expert finger-style guitarist,
Griggs will perform several
songs by composers such as Robert Johnson, "Mississippi" John
Hurt, Duke Ellington and others.
He also discusses the evolution
of the guitar from its origins as
a folk instrument through its
gradual acceptance in the con-
cert hall and recording studio, to
its position today as an essential
voice in American music. There
is something for listeners of all
tastes on this wide-ranging program.
Griggs has presented more
than 500 solo guitar concerts
throughout the USA, Germany,
the United Kingdom, France, the
Low Countries, Scandinavia and
eastern Europe at art centers,
festivals, museums, churches,
jazz clubs and other venues. His
recordings are available on Folkways Records, Music of the
World, Treecastle Music and
