SEPSIS AWARE - January 2012 Issue 1 | Page 5

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) helps with some of the extra costs caused by long-term ill-health or a disability if you’re aged 16 to 64.

You could get between £21 to £134.40 a week.

The rate depends on how your condition affects you, not the condition itself.

You’ll need an assessment to work out the level of help you get. Your award will be regularly reassessed to make sure you’re getting the right support.

The problem with PIP

When we applied for PIP we was told the claim would be sorted within 71 days.... and you cant apply for PIP until you have had the illness for 3 months, I am not allowed to claim carers allowence until the person claiming PIP has been awareded with their claim. Being as my wife was so ill, and over night got so ill as in there was no gradual decline in ther health, we have now been waiting for money for 6months with no income. I had to give up work and make dormant two companies to care for my wife as she cant be left alone at home, as this would have been a serious risk to her safety and with needing Heamodialysis 3 x per week and no longer being able to drive due to nerve damage in her legs, meaning she cant walk un aided and being blind in one eye she also requires me to take her to all appointments, we have hospital appointments everyday for the next 3 weeks. How does someone in this situation that dont have savings and are on their own manage. we have to pay 50.00 per week in travel (Diesel), we have a mortgage we didnt ask to be put in this situation as dont others... we have both worked all our lives and we liked our life style..... We are sensible people we understand alot of people are putting in claims, but we will be working towards trying to get PIP prioritised so if your a priority 1 for argument sake you will get prosessed faster than a priority 3. This can work, as some people claiming PIP can still work but are still due support, people who have no income desrve to be processed faster if its a disabilty as this cannot be helped, In our case we could be put into complete financial ruin because of this, and do we need the extra stress with everything else we are going through, this is something we didnt ask for and something that was out of our control and it could cost us more than it already has... people could loose there homes. We want to help with this, help getting forms filled out and assist people by contacting mortgage companies, utility companies and other debt related help.
