Streaming isn’ t cruise, or cargo, shipping, but that doesn’ t mean it doesn’ t have a carbon footprint. It may tread relatively lightly, but its footprint is growing geographically and demographically.
And streaming is yet another example where the‘ developed world’ takes all the benefit, while the global south – still mainly served by energy efficient FTA – reaps the worst effects of warming. Just because streamers can make themselves carbon neutral through carbon credits, doesn’ t mean we’ ll all get carbon neutral summers in the years to come.
What emerges from a quick tour of the research is that getting a measure of what’ s happening where in the distribution chain can illuminate problems, and those responsible. Developing a widely accepted currency so all can see what consumes what, has been an essential first step.
So far, though, the big challenges are in the trickiest places. They’ re in people’ s homes; old devices, badly set-up devices, mis-used devices. Getting consumption down at the device is about education and incentives from streamers and service providers.
The other big, related, problem is the constant peak power level of network infrastructure; i. e. the network is ready for peak all the time because it’ s not possible to turn it up and down – yet. One suggested solution is to incentivise people to spread their use and thereby reduce the peak – good luck with that.
More realistic is to redefine services with much more availability of downloads onto decode capable devices; the consumer would like the flexibility and portability, the planet would like the carbon saving. The problem is not technical, it is rights and business rules. That should be a soft-target, right?
