Gen AI

in film
and TV
Matt Quirk , Director ,
WW HPE Channel & Partner Ecosystem , OEM Solutions , asks whether
Gen AI spells curtains for film and TV or a new beginning .

Film , television , and music are going through tectonic changes . Everything is in flux , from how we capture the initial creative spark to how we produce , distribute , and market content . Box office and cable are fading in the face of streaming . Once dominant studios are struggling to survive .

Despite the losses , green shoots are emerging everywhere . Launching a streaming platform is easier than ever . New channels are serving niche audiences , reviving older IP , and bringing never-before-broadcast content to global audiences .
Technology , especially IP-based transmission , fuelled the current revolution . Now , there ’ s a new technology promising to turn things upside down yet again : generative artificial intelligence , better known as Gen AI .
In June , HPE and NVIDIA announced NVIDIA AI Computing by HPE and HPE Private Cloud AI , a combined solution that makes private , secure Gen AI development and applications available to practically any enterprise . What will turnkey Gen AI do for the media and entertainment industry ? Will it be a blessing or are we opening a new Pandora ’ s Box ?
Innovative disruption is the norm in media and entertainment The industry owes its existence to technological innovation , from Guttenberg ’ s printing press to YouTube . Throughout history , media and technology have gone through cycles of creation and destruction . Movies vs . television , records vs . CDs , cable vs . streaming — each wave creating both existential dread and unimaginable opportunities . Through it all , one thing hasn ’ t changed : the human creativity that fuels the arts , business , and engineering .
When it comes to predicting AI ’ s impact on the industry , it helps to keep this long view in mind . Upheaval is the norm , not the exception . It would be naïve to say no one will be hurt by AI , but in all likelihood the benefits will outweigh the costs . Let ’ s see how AI — specifically private , ready-to-run Gen AI — will change five key areas in media and broadcasting .
Streaming will become more accessible and profitable Streaming-as-aservice platforms already deliver marketing
analytics plus ad sales and insertions on top of delivering content . Successful streamers such
as Crunchyroll , BritBox , and Shudder have proven the power of niche content . Gen AI will make it easier to identify specific audiences , license content , and monetise viewership , leading to new channels for underserved and smaller audiences .
Pixellot is a prime example . Pixellot uses AI to automate cameras , streaming , and analysis for small-audience events such as high school football , track , and rugby . Once Pixellot ’ s smart cameras are installed , the system automatically streams gameplay , identifies players , and scores the game , including detailed player performance metrics . We can expect AI to unlock more and more opportunities such as this for streaming entrepreneurs .
With HPE technology , streamers will be able to ramp up Gen AI services without complex investments in AI infrastructure . Automated translation , captioning , metatagging , and regionalisation will be part of every platform ’ s basic bundle . Since workloads live in a private cloud , platform providers will maintain tighter control over their IP .
Content delivery networks will get even smarter Gen AI promises major benefits for the content delivery networks ( CDNs ). Real-time traffic analytics will predict trending content and optimise file locations while AI automates routing and infrastructure for faster delivery .
Automated error detection and quality monitoring will further remediate issues and minimise disturbances in the viewing experience .
Hackers and pirates will face stronger defences Classic anti-hacking measures need profiles to recognise malicious activities . If the system hasn ’ t seen an attack signature before , it won ’ t recognise it . Gen AI can recognise novel activities that classic measures miss . Gen AI can be always-on and alert for signs of signal
