here’ s something so enticing about tending to your own garden, but what if you don’ t have the space to create a blooming backyard? Container gardening could be the perfect solution for you.
“ Container gardening is growing plants in anything other than the ground or a large garden bed,” explains urban permaculture gardener and author of Your Asian Veggie Patch, Connie Cao( connieandluna. com).“ That can be pots, repurposed buckets, little cans, bowls – wherever your creativity takes you.”
It’ s a flexible and accessible way to cultivate your own flowers, herbs or veggies, whether you have a balcony,
courtyard or backyard to enjoy. In fact, landscape architect Shane Kingsbury, from award-winning landscape design studio Inspired Exteriors( inspiredexteriors. com. au), regularly recommends container gardening to clients with smaller outdoor areas.“ It’ s one of the most accessible ways to get into gardening, and the rewards come quickly enough to keep people motivated and engaged,” he says.
Spot the difference
The biggest pros of container gardening, says Shane, are control and flexibility.“ You’ re managing your own soil quality, drainage and sun exposure, which can be
hard to work around sometimes given the space or what you’ re trying to achieve.”
Connie agrees.“ Containers are great because you can move them around to chase the sun, and this includes taking them with you if you move house. They can also be easily rearranged to create different settings in the garden, and there are lots of options to suit your style.”
It’ s also easier to control the quality of soil you’ re using, she adds.“ You can make your own or buy potting mixes that suit your plants’ needs.”
Plus, container gardening is a great intro to the gardening world for anyone who feels intimidated by the thought of maintaining a full garden.“ I love the idea
