Shape it up
Whether you have a compact patio or sprawling garden, your aim is the same: a set-up that makes cooking and hosting easier. Choosing the right layout can enhance cooking performance, workflow and comfort. The‘ golden triangle’ rule has been the recipe for indoor kitchen success since the 1940s, letting us move seamlessly between the three main work areas: cooktop, sink and fridge. Modern family dynamics and design trends have moved us away from the triangle, but it’ s still a good principle to adapt to your outdoor kitchen, whatever shape it takes.
An L-shape works well in a spacious area, with the grill station on one side and the prep area, extra storage, fridge and sink on the other. Add bench stools along the free side to create an inclusive environment where guests can mingle with

the flame tamer. If you have the space to spare, turn it into a U-shape with an island bench.
For compact areas, including balconies, go for a single-wall format. A galley configuration with two parallel benches suits courtyards or linear-shaped spaces – just factor in room for traffic flow.
Build flexibility into the design in case you want to add amenities, such as a pizza oven or meat smoker, at some point. And, if you don’ t have an outdoor fridge and sink, make sure your kitchen inside is easily accessible from your outdoor one.
Tips for tabling
The dining table is a key element in any culinary area. It should be chosen not only for function and comfort but also for how it creates connection during meals.
|
While the style of your table matters, its shape and size will determine the flow of your space. Measure the area to help you select a table that fits comfortably. Account for clearance when pulling out chairs and walking around them.
Your table should mimic the shape of your dining zone. Choose round tables for pocket patios as they have no corners to bump into and fit more chairs. Square tables are best in square areas and, like round tables, create an intimate experience. Rectangular shapes are better for accommodating large crowds in an elongated area. Allow about 60cm of table space for each person.
Take a seat
Pair your table with weather-resistant dining chairs that are lightweight for portability, and neatly stack away.
