It’ s always frustrating when, no matter how hard you try to keep things tidy, mud, sand, leaves and everyday debris get dragged into your home. If you’ ve dreamed of having a dedicated place to store muddy or wet footwear, outerwear and sports gear, the good news is that, if you have enough space in your entrance hall, you can have a dedicated mud room – and it’ s not hard to create yourself.

But, before you get started, it’ s important to consider the needs of those in the household, says Tamara Liebmann, a professional organiser and a member of Professional Organizers in Canada. Make sure you count everybody, including pets and regular visitors, such as family members providing weekly childcare.
Then, ask yourself a series of practical questions, including: What things do you all need when you walk out of your home? What items, such as mail, prams, work boots, keys, purses, backpacks and caps, do you bring home daily? Also, what gets tracked in, like mud, sand, gravel, leaves or dirt?
Liebmann recommends setting up an“ Insta mud room” near the entrance your family uses most, which may not be the front door. Sometimes a side door, or even a garage entrance, makes a better spot for a mud room. >
