Forget carbon-copied fads from Pinterest. Interiors expert Carlene Duffy shares how you can take your interiors from trending to timeless in seven easy steps.

Trends have become a dirty word in interior decorating circles.“ I think that’ s because of the wider application of those trends,” explains Carlene Duffy, an interior designer, educator, author, TV host and owner of interior design studio Cedar & Suede( Cedarandsuede. com. au).“ We’ re seeing them used in uninteresting ways [ and ] it feels like it’ s going to date because it’ s straight out of a brochure.”
The good news? There is a way to incorporate trends tastefully without making your home feel impersonal or out of step.“ You just have to make sure you apply them where it’ s relevant, but also in a way that’ s inspired and informed by your home and tastes,” she adds.
Duffy sat down with the Connection to teach members how to create an ageless aesthetic that you and your family will always love.
1. Forget feature walls
The hues you choose are less important than how you use them.“ It’ s the high contrast of colours that people often tire of, so my approach has always been using colour in a way that feels tonal,” she explains.“ If you’ re going to choose a colour, really commit to it rather than just doing something like an accent wall that sits adjacent to white walls. If you really make it one with the space, you’ ll get more longevity out of it.” >
