IN THE FOCUS ON BLOEMFONTEIN AS A CITY , PRODUCER CHARL YSSEL AND SENWES ’ INVOLVEMENT THERE , REFERENCE WAS MADE TO A NUMBER OF TERMS RELATING TO THE HEART SEVERAL TIMES .

A

number of idioms refer to the heart , such as at the heart , learn by heart , etcetera . However , it is interesting that the reference to heart in a lot of idioms is due to a mistake . When something is from the heart , it forms the core of your thoughts , and when you learn something by heart , you memorise it . However , it refers to the brain and not the heart .
The reason why it was linked to the heart , is that the ancient Greeks made an incorrect analysis of our bodily functions . The Greeks believed that the heart was the most important organ and that intelligence , memory and emotion were situated in this organ . This view was carried through the ages and became the basis of all these idioms and expressions .
Nowadays it refers to the core of something . In the case of Bloemfontein , the city is situated in the centre ( heart ) of South Africa . The term is also relevant in respect of agriculture . The agri-sector plays the most important role in producing food for the nation ,
as indicated by the slogan of the University of the Free State : " A nation which looks after its agriculture , provides for its future ".
We also report on the Senwes AgriRewards-scheme which was launched to look after its producers , which are at the centre of everything . We also visit John Deere and Senwes Equipment , which form an integral part of the company , and read about the first new John Deere 9570RX tractor which was delivered at the Van der Lindes . Congresses are the annual meeting place of stakeholders in the industry and we report on the Free State Agriculture and Northwest Agriculture congresses which were held recently .
This edition also features Jan Serfontein ' s first hunting article , which he will be writing on a regular basis for Scenario . Technical articles such as Safex Scenarios with Susari , Come rain or Shine and Grain Market Prospects , as well as guidelines by Gerrit Oosthuizen regarding planning for the future also appear in this edition .
Our faith can certainly not be left out and is definitely the heartbeat or central point of out existence - we feature spiritual articles such as those of Jenny Mathews , Milanie Vosloo , Willie Botha and Carel Botma .
Producers , you are the heartbeat and at the heart of South Africa !
