Lick Supplements to survive the winter
Late rains have fallen over the country and brought some drought relief . The rain was , however , too late for pastures to recover fully after the drought and produce enough grass for the coming winter . Roughage reserves are generally low and expensive after the drought and without roughage it is difficult for animals to survive a drought or winter . Licks can be used to improve roughage quality and also to extend the usage of the available roughage . It is , however , very important for producers to understand that a lick is not a feed and can , under no circumstance , replace roughage . If no roughage is available , licks – especially urea containing licks – cannot be given to animals .
When animals are grazing low protein grass , remember that there is not enough protein in the grass for the microbes to grow and multiply and to digest the consumed grass . The grass therefore moves slower through the rumen , intake declines and animals lose weight .
Urea containing maintenance licks are given to increase the digestibility of the grass and to stimulate intake .
Production licks contain lower levels of urea as well as some natural proteins and energy . Although production licks are expensive and intakes are much higher than that of maintenance licks , it can be used to extend the use of dry grazing and to prevent the purchasing of expensive roughage .
If no more grazing is available , any low quality roughage can be bought , treated with urea and a molasses product and fed to animals .
