Senwes toast 50 years ’ success with NAMPO

FOLLOWING THE NAMPO Harvest Day edition of the Senwes Scenario ( April / May ), more research was done into the history of NAMPO . “ It is important to tell people more about the interesting facts and background of the NAMPO Harvest Day and Senwes ’ involvement ,” said Thys Grobbelaar , Senior Grain Analyst at Senwes Grainlink . Thys is regarded as Senwes ’ own historian . Senwes was one of the first eight exhibitors when NAMPO Harvest Day ( previously known as SAMPI ) set out in 1967 on the farm , Donkerhoek .
Shortly after the first Harvest Day , it was decided in 1971 to hold different NAMPO Harvest Days . Three NAMPO Harvest Days were held in 1972 - 1973 in different districts : Donkerhoek ( Bloemfontein district ), Annie Lombaard ( Hartebeesfontein / Ottosdal district ) and Hopefield ( Bloemfontein district ).
The NAMPO Harvest Day held on the farm Annie Lombaard , on the left hand side of the Hartebeesfontein and Ottosdal road , bear the footprints of Senwes . The farm is near the Senwes Melliodora silos and was named after the aunt of the late Pieter Meyer , Annie Lombaard . Pieter Meyer was the chairman of Senwes from
1994 to 1999 .
After the three NAMPO Harvest Days a NAMPO Symposium was held , where the possibility of one central NAMPO Harvest Day to be held over a period of four to five days was discussed . A central NAMPO Harvest Day Committee and ad hoc-committees were established and at the same time a decision was made regarding a permanent site and date . Senwes has been using the Senwes hall ( now known as the Hinterland hall ) to exhibit its divisions and products since the first NAMPO Harvest Day at Marthaville .
The naming rights of the Senwes hall were retained over the years and were changed in 2013 to the Hinterland hall where the Hinterland ranges of firearms and the innovative Senwes Grainlink stall can be found .
The NAMPO Harvest Day went from strength to strength over the years and this was confirmed by Thys . “ My first NAM- PO Harvest Day was in 1975 , when the agriculture students at the University of the Free State received complimentary tickets for an ox braai . I have been a staunch supporter ever since .”
