THE HEART OF A FARMER
WIN
THE WORLD CAN
LEARN SO MUCH
FROM FARMERS. FROM
THOSE PEOPLE WHO
LEARNED LONG AGO
HOW TO SHOW THEIR
DEPENDENCE ON A
HIGHER HAND.
D
uring the past drought
season - the pain of which
will be felt for a long time to come
- farmers once again showed the
world why they do what they are
doing. Why they have the courage
to start over - year after year. Why
they manage to have a courageous
smile on their faces in times of
sunshine and in times of rain.
Farmers showed us once again
where they are rooted, where they
find strength and courage. The
farmers of our country showed us
more than just the above: They
set an example of what to do when
your neighbour's harvester will
not bring in a crop this year ... or
when your neighbour's cattle have
nothing to eat. How a person
should act when the person on
the other side of your fence has no
hope left.
Through the years farmers
always managed to look up - because they knew how to kneel
before their Maker. They know
exactly how dependent they are,
how vulnerable humanity really is,
despite all the 'large', human-made

crops that we think we deliver.
Farmers also have the ability to
face the future with endless expectation, with the sure knowledge
that a new day, a new season,
always brings new possibilities and
new rays of hope.
But even more important:
Farmers know how to live today,
how to make the best of this day
in these circumstances. To embrace what I receive today with
gratitude and to gracefully accept
what I cannot have and to manage
what I have in a sensible manner.
The secret of faith may be
locked up in the realisation that
we are nothing ... yet everything,
that we cannot do anything by
ourselves ... yet we can do everything through Him. That we do
not only live for today's harvest,
but also for tomorrow's: For what
we will receive one day.
Perhaps farmers in particular
understand that a grain of wheat
has to die first ... before it
can live.
Father - I thank you for
your grace on this day and
I know that You are my
God - yesterday, today and
tomorrow.
