HUNTING the smell of a camp fire, with the coffee pot on the coals on one side. The smell of damp soil after the previous night's rain. The fresh smell of bread on a stick and syrup next to the camp fire. Smells bring back good memories and certain images are remembered for ever. A Huge baobab tree in the bushveld is characteristic of the area. Where else will you find a more beautiful thorn tree than the camel-thorn in the Kalahari? Sunrise is nowhere more beautiful than being viewed from your sleeping bag in the veld. Where will you find a more beautiful moonless night when the starts are extra bright? In addition to the smells and images, we also have other experiences which we keep in our hearts and which we tell other non-hunters about. The night sounds of the veld are one of the experiences which we take with us. Friendships in the camp, fresh liver on the coals and many other experiences which we treasure and which we cannot convey to any other person. They have to experience it first-hand before they will understand. The moment which makes me return to the veld year after year is the moment which God grants a hunter. The moment when the buck is in my visor and I know that I have the power to take its life in a responsible manner. The moment when I pull the trigger, is unforgettable. The responsibility given to us to use only what we need, is an unbelievable gift and experience. My visits in the veld and everything I want to do in the veld, are planned in the finest detail. I know where I will hunt this year. I am on my way to the Northern Cape, again. I have made my calibre choice. I am practicing to make sure that I can place the right shot in the right place. Let's approach this season with the knowl- edge that we will be gathering special moments and stories again. Enjoy every moment in the veld! SENWES SCENARIO | AUTUMN 2019 55
