AREA FOCUS Standerton sets the standard Senwes Grainlink now in cosmos world as well There are leaders and followers in life, and then there are people who set the standards. Standerton definitely falls in the latter category and is also a leader in many respects. Approximately a year ago, Senwes moved into Mpumalanga, specifically Standerton, where the team is already making a difference. Senwes Scenario focuses on this Mpumalanga city and on one of our producers in the area, Edzard Biermann.  By Aubrey Kruger Senwes Scenario Editor T he city of Standerton is 142 years old, since it was founded on the farm Grootverlangen. For historians - it was named after Commander Adriaan H. Stander, who was the original owner of the farm. Standerskop, a hill close to town, which is approximately 1 640 m above sea-level, was also named after him. During the first war of independence the South African sol- diers fought the British in this area. SENWES GRAINLINK The Senwes Grainlink branch has been operating in Standerton since 2018. Neil is the regional grain marketer here, and Joelien handles producer grain marketing and control. 38 SENWES SCENARIO | AUTUMN 2019 PROGRESS From not a single client a year ago, they have now met almost 70% of the clients in the area personally, updated their information and revisited them - a number of them have already become Senwes clients. However, there are also other peo- ple whom you already know. WELL-KNOWN PEOPLE FROM THE AREA Many South Africans remembers our re-entrance to international rugby and our first world cup rugby match was against Australia, when Pieter Hendriks ran circles around the famous David Campese to score his impressive try, which confirmed our claim to the title. He is a stalwart Standerton inhabitant. Another Springbok, Jaco Kriel, also went to school in Standerton and rugby stars such as Quinton Swartz and Howard Mnisi also drank Standerton water. We stay with rugby with international referee Mark Lawrence, who was the referee at the 2003 and 2007 world cup tournaments and who also hails from Standerton. While Standerton inhabitants can clear- ly stand their ground, they can also shake their booties - Afrikaans singer Pieter Koen, who is well-known for his song “Skud jou Biscuit” and many other hits, is also from Standerton. Judging by the advertisements in the city, there are many other Pieters in town addition to Hendriks and Koen. Many of us know the morning pro- gramme Morning Live - the owner Sakina Kamwendo, also hails from Standerton. OLD BUILDINGS AND INTERESTING LANDMARKS
