AREA FOCUS The Senwes Equipment workshop is strategically situated right alongside the N2. 21 | East-London race from Port Alfred, which ends here in East-London. FAMOUS LANDMARKS One famous landmark is the airport, which has been here since 1927 - however, it has often changed location. The harbour is also the only river port in South Africa. The John Baillie memorial at the harbour commemorates the historical even in 1835 when the British flag was hoisted for the first time in this area. A street was also named after John Bailie. The harbour still clearly reflects the name Port Rex, which was the original name of the city. The city hall is unique with its corner- stone which was laid in 1897. The bell 22 SENWES SCENARIO | AUTUMN 2018 tower was devoted to Queen Victoria and a number of other buildings and churches can be seen, which include the Dutch Reformed Church and the St. Andrew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Back to racing drivers - the Grand Prix race track of 3,9 km has been a landmark since 1959. It is a shorter version of the race track which used to be more than 23km. The Daimler Chrysler plant, where the C-class Mercedes Benz sedans are manufactured, is massive and sports a thousand vehicles which is a beautiful sight at the harbour.
