••• CO L U M N MILANIE VOSLOO FIRE-BREAKS PHOTO: LEEF WIN FIRE-BREAKS HAVE SAVED MANY A FARM FROM TOTAL DESTRUCTION AND HAVE DEFUSED MANY EXPLOSIVE SITUATIONS W e are living in a time with burning issues at various levels which have the potential to make us lose our cool. Potentially explosive situations which can easily get out of control. The natural reaction in such situations is to find the arsonist and call him to account for his deeds. The reality is, however, that in the event of a veld fire the priority would be to put out the fire and to prevent more damage, and not to find the arsonist. Children of God are called to be fire-break people. People called to prevent veld fires and limit the destruction caused by fires. Of course this is not easy. Fire-breaks often have to be made in inhospitable areas, inaccessible to bulldozers. Reconciliation has to be brought about by individuals removing hurdles for others; people who demonstrate love and kindness, irrespective of their own interests, by simple, yet powerful, actions such as sound communication, understanding, reaching out - an attitude, a way of speaking, 64 doing and not doing. We may wonder if this is perhaps asking too much. However, think about where we would have been if Jesus did not come to build a bridge between us and God. Think of how soot-blackened our world would have been without this Builder of bridges. Every single one of us will get an opportunity in our ordinary lives to build a road of love, somewhere. Even if we have to dig deeper than what we find comfortable. May every one of us - fallible but saved people - manage to do just that. Father, please help me to live your example of reconciliation - despite myself. To build bridges between people, despite my human nature. To, despite my own emotions, live by your all-consuming love.
