AUBREY KRUGER KROONSTAD - PART 2: BEN BRINK, your faithful Senior Grain Procurer BEN BRINK is our faithful Senior Grain Procurer in Kroonstand. I use the word faithful because this man has been with Senwes since 1988 and has been in Kroonstad since 1996. But that is not where it all started. The interesting thing about Ben is that he, unlike Carike Keuzenkamp’s Aai Aai die Witborskraai, moved inland from the Western Cape. Although he was born in Mossel Bay, he moved to Pretoria at a young age. He matriculated at the Hoër Landbouskool Brits, now known as Wagpos. He remembers those years well and tells us that there were 230 boys in the school, all of whom were hostel dwellers. “It was wonderful!” After matric 28 he studied BSc Agric (Animal Production) at the University of Pretoria, or Tuks. After completion of his two years military service he returned to the books for another year and obtained his Higer Teaching Diploma at Tuks. He accepted a teaching position at Wagpos, where he taught agricultural subjects. EXCHANGED TEACHING FOR AGRICULTURE After five and a half years in the teaching profession, he joined Senwes as animal scientist in the Agricultural Services division in Klerksdorp in September 1988. He pursued further studies and qualified himself as agricultural economist in 1996, when he ac- Apr/May 2016 • SENWES Scenario cepted a position in Kroonstad. GRAIN PROCURER When the single channel marketing dispensation changed to a free marketing dispensation, he accepted a position as grain procurer at Grain Marketing in Kroonstad. His primary function is the procurement of grain. Another important function is to provide grain marketing information to producers to enable them to make informed decisions. Ben is married to Petra and they have two children. Ben likes to read and enjoys sports in his free time. Bena and Petra try to jog 30 to 35 kilometres at least four times a week. Ben says that jogging is an excellent way of relieving frustration.
