We were very lucky with the weather and ran in some superb scenery. Students had theory sessions in between practical sessions on topics like running form and core stability. The most dedicated students, those who completed all the optional runs, clocked up approximately 57km over the four days! John Witton 8 SPORT D 1-1 Hockey Tour to South Africa In July a 35-strong squad departed for a two-week tour of South Africa for four and five-night stays in Cape Town and Stellenbosch respectively. The girls benefited from a three-hour coaching session provided by some top Western Province coaches, which set them up for the gruelling schedule of six matches in six days. The games were well matched and hard fought, and Sevenoaks was quickly introduced to the physicality and pace of South African hockey. The girls were fortunate to visit some fantastic settings, play in superb facilities and receive outstanding hospitality. There were some excellent performances and mixed results but the main outcome was that of enjoyment, lasting friendships and preparation for the season ahead. SEVENOAKS SCHOOL 2017-2018 Beyond the hockey the girls experienced the views from the top of Table Mountain, a traditional African Malay dinner with drumming, and a visit of Robben Island and the Drakensberg Correctional Centre. They saw penguins at Boulders Bay, cheetahs at the Cheetah Outreach centre, and enjoyed chocolate, cheese and wine tasting, and the Cape Canopy zip wire (which was not for the faint-hearted). The trip was rounded off with a two-night stay at the fantastic Kariga Game Reserve where we got up close to elephants, giraffes, rhinos and a pair of male lions resting after the killing of a zebra. In all a truly cultural, sporting and gastronomic trip. Liz Joseph 9
