MUSIC AT SEVENOAKS CHORAL CONCERT

Vocal performers from Year 7 to staff and parents created a night to remember.

On Friday 7 March, the Pamoja Hall was filled with beautiful music and brilliant performances as we held the Music at Sevenoaks choral concert. The night featured everything from pop and musicals to sacred choral works, with students from all year groups coming together to perform.
The concert began with the Junior Chamber Choir, which I am part of. We sang‘ Ah, Love, But a Day’ by Amy Beach – a gentle and emotional piece about love and change, and then‘ Die With a Smile’, a fun, upbeat song by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, directed by Miss Eccleshall. It was such a great mix and really rewarding to perform both.
The Senior Girls’ Ensemble, directed by Ms Day, followed with‘ Music When Soft Voices Die’ by Charles Wood – a quiet and reflective piece – before jumping into the lively and jazzy‘ Chattanooga Choo Choo’ by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon, which got the audience smiling.
Next came the Chorus, also directed by Ms Day, with two musical theatre hits:‘ Electricity’ from Billy Elliot and‘ Light at the End of the
Tunnel’ from Starlight Express. Ms Day pulled out her train whistle during the second piece which made it even more entertaining for those watching. Both songs were energetic and theatrical, with great solos and lots of expression.
The Sennocke Consort gave a more classical set, with‘ Lead Me, Lord’, by Samuel Sebastian Wesley, the moving‘ Crucifixus’ by Antonio Lotti, and‘ Sleep’ by Eric Whitacre, which was full of beautiful, shimmering harmonies. They were directed by Alex Leadbeater( Year 11), Mr Dyer and Eve Ward( Lower Sixth).
After the interval, the Choral Society and the Parents and Friends Choir, directed by Mr Harvey, performed a rich selection of music, showcasing the variety and power of choral singing. Pieces included‘ Jesu, Joy of Man’ s Desiring’ by Bach, Ave Verum Corpus by Mozart,‘ God is gone up’ by Gerald Finzi,‘ Seek Him that Maketh the Seven Stars’ by Jonathan Dove and the gospel-inspired‘ Love Theory’ by Kirk Franklin. They were joined by talented student organists, who added so much to each piece.
Being part of the Junior Chamber Choir has been such a highlight. Rehearsals are full of laughter and learning, and standing on stage with my friends, singing our hearts out, is a feeling I’ ll never forget. This concert was a really special evening and I’ m already looking forward to the next one!
