Starring the Lower School , and featuring a dizzying journey pursued by police , a chase across moorland and a daredevil escape from a moving train
The Lower School production of The 39 Steps followed the story of Richard Hannay ( played by Dominic King and Emily Beazleigh ), an Englishman accused of murdering Annabella Smith ( Hannah Catchpole ) in an apartment in London . Hannay journeyed to Scotland to follow the last words of Annabella , a secret agent trying to stop information from escaping the country . On his journey through Scotland , Hannay encountered John , a crofter , and his wife Margaret ( Daniel Miller and Juliet Van Rossen ), Professor Jordan ( Dara Shanmuganathan ), and Pamela ( Beatrice Bryden ), with whom he evaded police capture and discovered the villain seeking to get information out of the country .
The set was constantly changing , with actors moving set pieces to accommodate the movement of the characters on stage to great comic effect . The set pieces themselves , such as sheep , train carriages and planes were perfectly designed by Miss Grant and her team . The costumes , also designed by Miss Grant , allowed the audience to be transported back in time to London in 1914 . The physical comedy in the play brought masses of laughter from the audience , and the Scottish accents put on by members of the cast added a further level of humour .
