RADIO DRAMA CLUB
Welcome to Sevenoaks : please listen carefully
Being a member of the radio drama team is like being part of a covert operation , tasked with providing entertainment to the school with the caveat of having as much fun as possible in its production . It ’ s what you would describe as one of the school ’ s best kept secrets .
Everybody gets the chance to propose a theme , write a script , act , direct and record as an idea is shaped and eventually morphs through pure comedy into an original piece of audio theatre . We work together across year groups and perform multiple roles within a single piece so there is the opportunity to meet new friends and even discover a new ‘ you ’ as you portray different , sometimes outlandish , characters while maintaining the anonymity that radio provides .
We love setting our drama in Sevenoaks , introducing some of its humorous idiosyncrasies that only those living here could truly appreciate . I have been part of Radio Drama Club since Year 7 when we put together a detective story – it would be interesting to hear it again and compare it to the work that we can now produce .
During the Michaelmas term it was brilliant to see some new joiners ; they had great ideas that we were able to develop together using our experience . We made ‘ War of the Deer ’ about a herd of deer which had escaped and disrupted parents ’ evening , and at Christmas , we composed a comedy sketch about employing reindeer . It was available on Firefly for the whole school to listen to – a very proud and daunting moment .
We are currently working on a piece called ‘ Welcome to Sevenoaks , Please Invade Carefully ’. This is loosely based on a BBC Radio 4 sitcom , Welcome to Our Village , Please Invade Carefully . Instead of a fictional village in Buckinghamshire , we set our drama in Sevenoaks , making it funnier and far more identifiable .
None of this would be possible without Miss Fraser ’ s guidance and patient encouragement of our eccentric ideas or the technical genius of Mr Beston .
