During October half-term 24 fortunate students spent 12 unforgettable days in South Africa on the Global Action trip . The trip had two parts – understanding the challenges in the Savannah near Johannesburg , and engaging in projects in Swellendam , outside Cape Town . Before leaving , we raised funds for these projects , through movie nights , an art sale and a sponsored run in Knole Park .
The first week saw us in small groups working on projects designed to have an impact through creativity , emphasising the powerful potential of arts to drive change .
The first project , run by local artists , was to create a mural promoting the message that ‘ we are one ’ and that race should not be a cause of discrimination . After finishing the mural , they climbed a mountain and upon reaching the summit , discussed respect , acceptance , gratitude and connection .
The second project was run by the Unity Food Garden . The group set up gardening plots for residents to grow their own food , saving money and promoting sustainability and eco-friendly growth . Working with a tight-knit community , the group met locals in a common , tranquil space , and their eyes were opened to the deep-rooted issues that are prevalent in South Africa . The differences in the garden before and after were incredible to see .
The third project was with a performing arts centre called the Shack Theatre , run by a teacher to continue creative education outside the classroom . The group immersed themselves in theatre , interacting despite language barriers , and each student learned and played their part exceptionally , dancing and singing .
The final project filmed and documented it all . These students saw the starkest difference between our everyday lives in Kent , and the reality that many people face every day . Each project had its highs and lows , and each student had moments that will stay with them forever .
The trip then focused on the impact that we have on our world , and how we can conserve our natural environment . Wildlife was everywhere , allowing us to truly appreciate its beauty and the importance of preserving the natural world . Our immersion included a cheetah sanctuary and witnessing a rhino being de-horned to discourage poachers . There were the inevitable complaints about crack-of-dawn game drives , but the once-in-a-lifetime experiences more than made up for it .
For me , the trip was a gateway to a new perspective , observing a very different world , and opening my eyes to the possibilities of life . Every human connection will be treasured ; each interaction valued as a small step in reshaping us . Furthermore , we rediscovered the love and appreciation for nature that we had as small children . This was another invaluable opportunity as Sennockians to let the world shape us as we grow and walk on our paths that we hope will one day shape the world .
