CORONATION EXEAT AND TREE PLANTING
As we looked forward to the Coronation Exeat , the school marked the occasion with a tree planting by the Gardens team , the Headmaster and students , a display in the Johnson Library and for lunch , coronation quiches prepared by the Catering team .
The tree is a monarch birch , Betula maximowicziana , a species also planted by King Charles in honour of the Queen ’ s Green Canopy project in 2022 . The mature tree will reach around 20m in height , with heartshaped leaves . It was planted on the lawn between the Froy Gates and the SEC building . We are proud of our impressive number and variety of trees all around the school grounds , and have a history of marking coronations with planting – in 1937 , an oak tree , raised from an acorn by the Second Form , was planted on Solefields to mark the coronation of King George VI .
King Charles visited the school in 1977 , an event remembered by many Old Sennockians – look out for a photograph in the Alumni pages , along with a few historic royal connections .
