SUSTAINABILITY AT SEVENOAKS
Sustainability is one of the key focuses at Sevenoaks , which is reflected in the wide range of opportunities and approaches in order to tackle the school ’ s goal of net zero . The goal of net zero combines very well with the school ’ s ethos of service .
As a Thursday afternoon service option students can be a part of Green Team or UOcean Project . The Green Team , run by Mrs Bonsall and Dr Martin , looks at approaches towards sustainability on a school level with projects such as growing fruits and vegetables on the school allotment .
The UOcean Project first came to Sevenoaks two years ago to hold an entrepreneurial workshop . Since then they have worked with us leading local litterpicks , raising awareness of plastics pollution , opening a Chapter at the school , promoting ocean sustainability , and Ms Schaefer has even led beach clean-ups – despite not being near to a beach !
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION
Our allotment has bedded in next to Sennocke House , thanks to the consistent efforts of the Green Team , who have continued to harvest an array of garden vegetables which are donated to the Sevenoaks Larder foodbank , with rhubarb and pumpkins being in particularly strong supply . Meanwhile the Action for Biodiversity team promotes and analyses the biodiversity wildlife in our own local environment .
In addition to the Thursday afternoon service options , students typically involve themselves with Eco Committee , run by Mr Lilley , or with their own projects that the school can support . One project that aids the movement towards net zero is planting trees . The Estates department worked with students at lunchtimes in order to plant over a hundred trees around the school campus .
