THE MASKED MILER
61,186 miles covered in total . 762 individuals took part . No , this was not the caribou migration , it was the Sevenoaks Masked Miler .
The event began on 11 January 2021 , near the beginning of the third lockdown , and was started to try and keep students fit and healthy , when some might otherwise have been sitting inside .
The idea was based on The Masked Singer , an American TV show in which celebrities dress up in huge animal costumes that hide their identity completely . They then sing a random song , and the panel of judges must guess who is behind the mask .
The Sevenoaks Masked Miler , however , did not include songs , celebrities , animal costumes or judges . Participants ran , cycled or walked a certain distance in a week and uploaded their mileage . Each student , teacher , parent or Old Sennockian was given a unique number to keep their identity secret until the very end . There was a leader board with all the numbers on it , so no one knew who anyone was . Then at the end , the numbers were revealed as names , and the competitors were ‘ unmasked ’.
The Masked Miler achieved its goal brilliantly , with over 3600 entries uploaded , and the distance from London to Sydney covered five and a half times over ! During Refugee Week , we had another running event where we all needed to do what we had been doing for the Masked Miler , and accumulate the distance from Syria to Sevenoaks , 5486 miles , as a school . We achieved this , as we covered 5876 miles , nearly 400 miles over our target .
After Easter , at the end of the process , Lower Sixth student Ben Reinhardt was revealed as the Masked Miler , with a whopping 814 miles covered ! Harry Stone of Year 10 was next , with 637 miles . Impressively , it was Year 7 pupil Charlotte Bloodworth who was in third place , with 630 miles !
We would like to thank Mr Cullen for coming up with this excellent idea , as well as all the PE department , for helping to make it happen .
Paul Taylor , Year 8
