FROM THE HEADMASTER
My first year as Headmaster of Sevenoaks has certainly been memorable . When I started in September 2020 , I oversaw the reopening of school after the nation ’ s first lockdown . I will always remember the joy of welcoming students and staff back to our gorgeous campus , and witnessing the reunion of friends .
Whilst I did not want the Covid-19 pandemic to dictate my first year , when the Kent variant emerged in the Michaelmas term , the virus inevitably came to dominate our lives and shape the way we taught and learned . Yet despite the challenges of the pandemic , so much was achieved . I have been amazed by the strength of our school community and its resilience . The creative , inquisitive and committed approach that students showed in their studies and cocurricular activities , even in lockdown , was phenomenal .
We accomplished many virtual firsts , from our STEM Week , Green Week and Refugee Week to the stunning Virtual IB Art Exhibition . Collectively we clocked up 61,186 miles in the Masked Miler competition – a few of those from me – and our service and partnership work in the local community was recognised in the Tes Independent Schools Awards for our Covid-19 response .
We also ran successful enrichment programmes for the Upper Sixth and Year 11 when their exams were cancelled . It was wonderful to see these year groups enjoying the Summer term and undertaking many different projects – learning for its own sake .
One of the greatest pleasures I have enjoyed this year has been discovering the hidden pathways , lush lawns and flowerbeds of the school campus . Our tranquil setting has provided a haven , helping us to stay grounded .
I have a great love for the arts and , after prolonged limits on live events , I couldn ’ t wait to hear our musicians perform in the Pamoja Hall . The performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto 1st movement in the Lower Sixth platform concert , by Malek Marar , was a privilege to witness . I also relished watching my first play in the Sackville Theatre , the Middle School production of Greenland .
