We spent time tracking animals , being educated whilst on safari , and helping to carry and transport bricks for an aircraft landing platform . This will protect the aircraft engine from dust as it prepares to search for poachers . Being able to work with the Pilanesberg Rhino Protection Trust and support their aim was a very enriching experience , as well as being able to see the animals and appreciate the effort put into conserving their habitat . We also spent a morning with a large team of experts and vets whilst they carried out a process called rhino notching . This helps to identify the rhinos by taking DNA samples , microchipping the horn and giving the best possible care and attention to the young rhino throughout this short process , so that it could be reunited with its mother – who remained close throughout – as quickly as possible . We had a once in a lifetime chance to get close up to the rhino during the procedure .
We were all very sad to leave and hope that we were able to have a lasting impact on the community and the people that we worked with . There is no doubt that the people we met and the experiences we had will stay in our thoughts forever .
