Berlin History and Modern Languages Trips
SIXTH FORM
The interdisciplinary History and Modern Languages trip to Berlin was both enjoyable and academically valuable , providing historical and cultural insight into the fabric of a diverse and vibrant city .
Despite the bitterly cold temperatures of Berlin in December , we covered a lot of ground ( both figuratively and literally ), exploring the historical landmarks of the city , such as the Holocaust Memorial and the Reichstag . I found the walking tour fascinating as I was able to see the physical remnants of history come to life in the city , such as the bullet-scarred walls of East Berlin from the Battle of Berlin in 1945 . However , the standout moment of the trip for me was our visit to the Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand ( German Resistance Memorial Center ). I found it particularly poignant as it told the individual stories of those who risked and often lost their lives in their resistance to the Nazi regime . One touching exhibition told the stories of those who hid and saved Jewish people from persecution . Being able to associate the historical facts with the photographs and stories of individuals was deeply moving , as it offered personalised accounts of those who were willing to sacrifice their lives in the interest of others .

Our visit to Berlin was fascinating and inspiring for us all . We were treated to numerous visits and guided tours , teaching us some of the intriguing and intricate history which has formed modern Germany . Like Aoibh , I found our visit to the German Resistance Memorial Center a particularly poignant and moving experience . Other highlights of the trip were the numerous museums we visited across the city , where guided tours gave us a thorough understanding of the most important milestones in Germany ’ s history , as well as visits to iconic sites , such as Cecilienhof Palace ( the location of the Potsdam Conference in 1945 ), the Berlin Wall memorial , the Bundestag and Bebelplatz ( the site of the Nazi book burnings ). These visits helped to give us a deeper understanding and appreciation of the monumental events which have shaped the history not just of Berlin , but the rest of Germany and the whole world .
