S ailing U19 schools national champions The sailing team enjoyed another fantastic year of success, culminating in the defence of their U19 schools national championship title. Other highlights included the girls winning the U19 ladies national title for the third year in a row and the U16s finishing third overall at the schools nationals. Sevenoaks sailors also competed on the RS Feva circuit including the nationals in North Wales and the world championships in Italy. In a year that saw 78 pupils take part in school sailing sessions, along with the Navy CCF section moving their sessions from Chipstead Lake to Bough Beech, sailing experienced another bumper season across the age groups. In the Summer term we competed at the 30th anniversary BSDRA national finals. The A team defended their South East Area schools championship title, and, in a very impressive team performance, they defeated long-standing rivals Magdalen College School in the final to win the schools U19 national title, with the B team finishing fourth. The U16s enjoyed another year competing in fleet racing on the RS Feva circuit, including events down in Weymouth and up in Abersoch in North Wales. In July, five Sevenoaks boats competed in the World Championships at Follonica in Italy, against 200 boats from 14 different countries. Becky Caiger and Jamie Elder, Ali Macun and Ferdinand Beier achieved commendable top half finishes and the experience was enjoyed by all. The U16s finished off the year by taking third place at the BSDRA national finals in Oxford. Results For the U19s, the first big competition was in October, when the A and B teams competed at the UK Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships. The A team were looking to defend their title and came incredibly close to doing so, losing out to Rugby School by a matter of inches right at the finish of the deciding race. The B team put in an incredible performance. Leading the event standings for much of the weekend, they ended in fourth place, meaning the school had two of the top four U19 teams overall. The teams trained hard over the winter, and in February the girls went to the RYA Ladies Team Racing nationals at Southampton, where they achieved a great fifth place overall, defeating a number of senior and university teams along the way; this meant for the third year running they were U19 Ladies Champions. 88 SPORT REVIEW U19A Winners BSDRA national finals Winners SE Area schools championships Runners-up UK U19 nationals U19B Fourth overall UK U19 nationals and BSDRA national finals Ladies U19 national champions 5th overall national finals U16 3rd BSDRA national finals Fleet Racing William Caiger won the RS Aero 5 UK National Championships
