G olf Skiing Under the captaincy of Marcell Veszpremi, the golf team had an enjoyable season that was not without success. The highlights included an impressive win over Bede’s in the first round of the HMC Foursomes and two very creditable draws against regional powerhouse Tonbridge. Harry Nicoll’s performance in the latter of these, his last match for the school, was outstanding. The ski team has enjoyed a successful second season, with highlights at the Independent Schools Ski Championships in Les Deux Alpes, France, and the Artemis British Interschools Ski Challenge in Pila, Italy. As those in the Upper Sixth leave the school, we look forward to the potential and promise of many of our younger athletes. This year also saw a number of new faces entering the squad, with Casper Hoving, Laurin Stelter and Kajsa Lenz all performing well. They along with Alex Gibb, Ben Spires and Hidde van der Plas will form the backbone of the future team. An overall playing record of exactly 50/50 over the course of the year, while solid, was dragged down by a number of very narrow defeats, especially to Eltham College in the ISGA Matchplay where the deciding game was lost on the 18th green. All members of the squad have all improved as players over the last year and I look forward to more success in the future. At the ISSC, Alex Huisman (Upper Sixth) finished second in the slalom and giant slalom for the U18 boys while Lara Gueorguieva (Upper Sixth), racing for the U18 girls, finished third in both slalom and giant slalom. Nicholas Clinton (Lower Sixth) has consistently achieved strong results in a very competitive age category, alongside a top cohort of younger skiers in the boys’ team. The strength across the entirety of the girls’ team was shown in Pila, where the junior team performed very well in a highly competitive and experienced environment. Nigel Haworth Throughout both seasons the team has accommodated both first-time and experienced racers who have competed in individual events, as well as the team parallel slalom – an exciting discipline and a great show of team spirit. Away from the slopes the team has continued to regularly train on land, with specialised strength and conditioning sessions. Lara Gueorguieva, Upper Sixth SEVENOAKS SCHOOL 2018-2019 99
