Debating Highlights:
National Competitions
English Speaking Union Mace Competition
Yasmine Kanagalingam and Gabriela Ivanova
(Upper Sixth) came second in the English Speaking
Union Mace Competition. Over 270 schools took
part in the qualifying rounds of this competition.
Yasmine and Gabriela were one of the two teams
who made it through to the final, debating the
motion ‘This house would grant suffragettes
posthumous pardons’, and were judged by former
Home Secretary David Blunkett.
Debate Mate Cup
Two Sevenoaks teams (out of four) qualified for
the Debate Mate Cup final: Marcus Choy and
Luke Ashworth, and Ellie Gilbert-Bair and Tasha
Dambacher (all Year 11). Loic Thiry (Lower Sixth)
was the fifth best novice speaker, Marcus Choy was
the joint sixth best speaker overall, Luke Ashworth
was the joint fourth best speaker overall and Ellie
Gilbert-Bair was the third best speaker overall.
University of Oxford Schools’
Debating Competition
Two Sevenoaks teams qualified for the finals day of
the Oxford Debating Competition. Roshni Agarwal
and Ray Jerram (both Lower Sixth) qualified for the
novice final.
University College London Schools’
Competition
Sevenoaks entered four teams to UCL’s debating
completion. Anna Power (Lower Sixth) and Ellie
Gilbert-Bair (Year 11) just missed out on making
the final and Luke Ashworth and Marcus Choy
(both Year 11) just missed out on making the
novice final.
