At the iFly indoor skydiving centre we had an interesting class on flight, terminal velocity and forces, then observed experiments in the wind tunnel (winds approaching speeds of 100mph) before having the amazing opportunity to fly in the wind tunnel aided by the instructor. At Wonderworks, we enjoyed exploring more than 100 hands-on exhibits that challenged the mind and sparked the imagination. Who could forget Mr Tate lying on a bed of nails! We also visited the Orlando Fire Department Museum and the Orlando Science Centre where there were four floors of exciting exhibits, giant screen movies and hands-on science stations. Disney World’s Epcot Centre is dedicated to technological innovation and international culture and we had a fantastic time visiting Future World and the World Showcase; and the fireworks display was literally awesome! Finally, the Kennedy Space Center, ‘where risk takers defy gravity and dreamers become heroes’. We saw the active launch area where Apollo missions inspired a generation and stood nose to nose with the Atlantis space shuttle which helped build the International Space Station and advance the Hubble Space Telescope. We also enjoyed a special astronauts’ hands–on training session with simulation technology, where some of us in the mission control room had to ensure the safe landing of our friends in the shuttle simulator. Meeting veteran NASA astronaut Winston Scott, and hearing about his space adventures, followed by a question and answer session, was another special highlight. It was a truly exciting and memorable trip for us all. Maureen Connolly 90 TRIPS AND ACTIVITIES SEVENOAKS SCHOOL 2017-2018 91
