During the final week of the academic year, all
students from Years 7 to 10 and the Lower Sixth were
involved in over 45 different activities and trips, each
linked to the future hopes, challenges and possibilities
of Generation Z. projects
Gen Z are the group born since just before the turn of
the millennium. This generation has grown up at war
with the loosely defined forces of global terrorism, has
known a world of political and financial turmoil, is the
first tribe of true digital natives, interacts actively on
social media websites and is risk-averse. Decoding code
The key aim of the projects was to provide students
with a range of exciting projects in different,
unfamiliar contexts. Students were encouraged to
collaborate meaningfully with other year groups, and
to nurture interdisciplinary skills that connect different
subjects with each other. It was an opportunity to
develop expertise in research, communication and
independent critical thinking, to work creatively and
imaginatively, to listen and to lead, and to enjoy
learning in practical ways outside the classroom.
On Founder’s Day parents and students had the
opportunity to see some of the work that had gone
on during the week, with a concert of original new
music, photography displays, animated films, short
films, show debates, a martial arts team pattern
demonstration, a refugee simulation, a short drama
and a dystopian art installation.

Film-making
“It was really easy to get invested in Dunton Green Primary School, where we were
helping the children. There was a sense of community within the group, and it was
fun. I also made a lot of new friends.”
India Leigh, Year 8 (Dunton Green)
“My favourite activity was the Linguistics Olympiad, which allowed us to use logic
to deduce the workings of obscure and unusual languages previously unknown to
us. In the afternoon we made links to English literature as someone from Oxford
came to lead a session about translating nonsense poems.”

“I especially liked the refugee simulation because I now understand what it is like
to be a refugee and how every story is different – you can’t just label six million
people in the same way.”
