Service and Community Music in the Community Sevenoaks School has had links with the musical activities of the local community for centuries. The Sevenoaks Festival, now a successful town-wide event, started within the school in 1970. This interest in the music of the town continues into the present day, both with student-based activities outside the school and with local groups coming into the school to use The Space. Musical activities based within the school involving the community include student musicians entertaining the elderly visitors at the Thursday Club run in Sennocke House; the annual prep and primary school concert giving local children the opportunity to perform in our wonderful Pamoja Hall; the school Wind Band which invites primary school children to 62 join them in playing at one of the Music at Sevenoaks concerts each year; chamber music groups taking part in the Knole Community Music Event; the Gamelan VSU group which runs as a weekly event for visiting children and the Christmas carol competition which is open to all local children. Outside the school, our student musicians perform in local care homes and regularly visit schools to help younger children with composition. New initiatives are in the pipeline to help with class music teaching in our local primary schools on an outreach basis, and the people of Sevenoaks are always very pleased to welcome our musicians into their community, something of which the Music department is justifiably very proud.
