A year in the Music department
A year in the Music department

After their first year at Sevenoaks, two members of the Music department reflect on their experiences.

The last year has certainly been a real whirlwind of an experience. One thing is for sure and that is that getting to know the various systems in the Music department at Sevenoaks has been a steep learning curve. There is just so much going on and you forever feel you are in this race against time to get everything in place. Fortunately we have unbelievably committed staff and, of course, we work with the very best in terms of the students. Some of the concerts have been outstanding. I think of the sheer variety of music from Mr Heighway’ s Messiah to Mr Palmer’ s Club Music Night – we really can do it all. Looking back on this hectic first year I’ d like to think that it’ s all just been a warm-up. There’ s much more to come …

My first year at Sevenoaks has been a whirl of activity; everything here seems to happen at breakneck speed, which is just how I like it. Friday afternoons with Choral Society have been a particular highlight, and it has been really rewarding seeing such a large group make incredible progress between September and March, culminating in such an impressive performance of Handel’ s Messiah. At Sevenoaks there is an enormous variety of music going on, and throughout my first year I’ ve wanted to get stuck into as much music-making as possible, whether it’ s playing Clean Bandit for the Lower School Singers or starting a Samba drumming club. With all the co-curricular music going on, it can be easy to forget all the music that goes on in the classroom, and for me the most rewarding part of this past year has been working with such phenomenal and energetic colleagues who are always quick to share teaching ideas and expertise.
