I have gotten a lot of applied learning experience through class work, my communication internship with WSU’s Center for Community Support and Research (CCSR) and student organizations I am involved in on campus. My internship has given me event planning experience as I was hired on to help with the planning of CCSR’s thirtieth anniversary celebration. From interviews to budgeting I have learned that there is a lot more that goes into planning an event than what the natural eye can see. I have done group public relations and advertising campaigns in classes for real clients such as SUCCESS in the Middle, Wichita Mid-Continent Airport and Wichita State University’s Fine Arts department. I learned that in the public relations field, you have to have time management and thick skin because proximity is important if you want to get the word out about an event or make a statement to recover a crisis and not all of your clients are going to agree with your first idea. Being the publication chair for the Wichita State Black Student Union has definitely taught me these things as well. This is my second year as publication chair for the BSU and I feel it has helped me retain the information and advice I learn in class. I am in charge of BSU social media accounts as well as maintaining its public image. I have created business cards, fliers, promoted events, wrote press releases, facilitated my own committee meetings and am currently working on producing a bi-monthly newsletter so that other students around campus are able to read about what the BSU has been up to and how they can get involved. I feel that my wide-range of experiences will be beneficial to your organization. I respond well to instructive feedback and I am always looking to expand my knowledge through applied learning. Public Relations is the field I want to go and grow into. With my experience working with clients through class projects and working in retail for almost eight years, I understand the value of client relationships and strategic communication. I would like to set up an interview with you sometime in the near future. You may call me at (316) 210-7033 or email me at [email protected]. If I have not heard from you within the next few weeks, I will send a follow up email. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you. Sincerely, Kelsey Haynes
