club member story funerals,” she said. The hall will accommodate 70-90 people. The big kitchen means events can be catered. Milt likes to busy himself in the club’s kitchen getting the coffee or tea. “I’m in the background, nobody knows I am around,” he said with a chuckle. Kathy is a real advocate of the club. “A lot of people say if they weren’t coming to this club, they would be sitting at home alone,” she said. “It’s really sad for any town that doesn’t have a place to gather. This is a place to get together and just talk, enjoy a game, have tea or coffee and visit.” As always, her welcoming attitude is obvious. Love at First Sight Love was in the air as Kathy and Milt Cooper talked about their celebration last September 24th at the seniors’ club. “She was just 19 when we got married,” said Milt. Kathy just turned 70 and Milt is 82 years young. “We loved square dancing. That’s how we met, at a dance,” said Milt, who admits to being a shy kind of guy. He was still a bachelor then. They went dancing again at a hunter’s ball. “After that we kept meeting accidentally,” Milt said. “Kathy’s mother said if we wait one year and still want to date she would say yes, it’s ok,” he added with a grin. Kathy added with a grin, “Mom told me if he wants to see you he’s got to come and see me first.” That’s the way things were done in their day. “I just like coming here opening up the club and seeing everybody. I love meeting the new people,” said Kathy with her typical enthusiasm and smile. “For many newcomers it’s just getting in the door and down the hallway,” she said, acknowledging that for many starting something new is difficult and change can be difficult when you are a senior. “Turns out Kathy’s mom was the grandest old lady I ever met,” said Milt, who knew from the get-go Kathy was the girl he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. “People don’t know what to expect so I say just come down here and find out how welcoming everyone can be,” she concluded. When asked what they thought each other’s best quality is, Milt said with a big grin, “She is not a spendthrift.” And Kathy said, “Compassion is his best quality, he has many. Milt has always been there for me.” The club currently has about 140 members. 8 When asked what has made their marriage last, Kathy said smiling, “We’ve done everything together, even worked side by side in business, and we are best friends and we never go to bed angry.”
