president’s message
To all members of Campbellford Seniors:
I was born in Italy. I came to Canada at the age of 8
with my family and settled in Toronto. It was difficult to
adjust to a new language and culture. From the age of 12,
I worked as a gas station attendant for four years. At the age
of 16, I worked part time as a carpenter with my father.
After high school I became a CN employee I held many positions; I was in
maintenance for 2 years, freight train dispatcher for 5 years, I went to college
for air brakes so I could become a rail car mechanic. I was a rail car mechanic
for 25 years, health & safety officer for 6 years, supervisor for 1 year, volunteered
raising funds for The United Way for 4 years. I was also Vice President of our
union for 4 years.
When my wife passed away, I needed a new start. I met my current partner
and she brought me to Campbellford. I thought if I was involved with something
I could make a difference. A friend belonged to the Campbellford Seniors
Club. He suggested I come and play cards. That was the beginning. I started to
participate in various activities. I have been surrounded by many great people
sharing laughs, jokes and many stories. After a while I learned that the president
was going to retire. The club was going to need a new president. Many members
encouraged me to run for the president’s position. I didn’t believe that I had
enough experience to run the club. I accepted the position because of the
support and confidence other members had for me. This is when I started to
believe I could make that difference. I was thrilled and apprehensive; taking this
position requires commitment and responsibility, but I’m ready and willing to do
the best that I can.
With the fantastic programmes we have in place and new programmes
being implemented, our club can only get better and the membership stronger.
With the help of all the members, we together can keep our club active and fun.
I look forward to the challenges ahead. I promise that I will do my very best to
make the best decisions for our club.
In solidarity,
John Mancini
