tools , books and a laptop for online classes were covered as well .
Outside of finances , another hurdle for Stringer was her dyslexia . But with help from SCC ’ s Manager of Disability Services , Angela Swim , accomodations were made for Stringer ’ s disability .
“ Because of my dyslexia , I have a little trouble reading sometimes ,” says Stringer . “ So to help me with written tests , they ’ ll send me to my own room where a reader will guide me along .”
This has further inspired her to one day be involved with SCC ’ s student advisory so that she can “ work with older
students and help them along the way .”
“ I thought I ’ d be too old to come back to school ,” she says , “ but [ SCC ] welcomed me with open arms ”.
“ I wish more older people would come to college to learn new things and to exercise their minds ,” adds McCowan . “ I ’ m a strong believer that you ’ re never too old to learn , and it doesn ’ t matter who you are , man or woman . If you want to learn to do anything , you can . All it takes is a small amount of effort . Debra is a great example .”
While fixing up the arts center is still her priority , coming back to school has
inspired Stringer with a handful of goals . On top of taking more classes in the future , she wants to look into starting up new courses for SCC . Specific examples include programs for solar energy and bringing back art classes . Stringer is especially adamant towards bringing art back to SCC because “ artists need a place to learn to create .”
Stringer also advocates for women getting into HVAC . Her argument being that “ companies are begging for women .” She stated , “ Women can become a job foreman all the way up to owning their own company . The possibilities are endless for HVAC .”
