to their E . Mt . Vernon Street location in 1974 , Don Hurt moved the family agency to its current location on 345 Langdon Street . From a small office space in 1960 , the family agency now boosts a large spacious building with ample parking and two drive-thru customer service windows .
And it was at one of those drive-thru windows that 23-year-old Donovan Hurt decided he wanted to join the family business as his future career .
“ At the time , I was unsure what I wanted to do as a career , and I was leaning towards getting into law ,” Donovan Hurt stated . “ Growing up , I had always worked at the agency office on a part-time basis . One day ,
I was working the drivethru window talking to one of our customers who had just lost her husband . We shared similar experiences , because I had suddenly lost my mom ( Kim Hurt ) after just a two-day stay in the hospital . After our conversation , the customer told me I was a natural at this and I should consider a career in insurance .”
“ When I told my dad and grandpa that I wanted to start a career in the insurance business , they were both extremely proud - especially grandpa ,” Donavan Hurt said . “ They have both been so supportive every step of the way .”
Over 20 years ago , Gene Hurt stepped away from the leadership of the agency and left it in the trusted hands of his son - and now his grandson . No longer in charge , Gene Hurt still stayed active in the business with advice and his ‘ Gift of Gab ’.
REUNITED
In 1953 , Gene and Mary Hurt were married at Eubank First Baptist Church . Their 68-year marriage produced three children - Kim , Jeannie , and Don - and several grandchildren along the way .
As they navigated their golden years , Mary moved into the Neighborhood of Somerset . Soon afterwards , Gene moved into Bluegrass Senior Living .
Mary was planning to move into Bluegrass Senior Living with her husband when the Pandemic hit .
At that point , the longtime married couple was separated for the first time in nearly a half a century . The pandemic separation lasted nearly three years . With the help of the administrative staff at Bluegrass Senior Living , Gene and Mary Hurt were finally reunited . Now , Gene and Mary Hurt are together again sitting in white rocking chairs on the Bluegrass Senior Living ’ s cozy front porch , watching the evening sunsets .
