half her age , find deep meaning in their work .
Jane has been a beacon of kindness and support for the community , offering more than just merchandise . She ’ s there with a listening ear , a comforting word , and even a small token of hope , like a stone angel , for those who need it most .
“ I don ’ t think of my age ,” she laughs , “ I just think of how I used to do it and try to keep on going .”
For Jane , and others like her , the shop isn ’ t just a place to work — it ’ s a place to connect , to lift spirits , and to make a difference in ways that can ’ t be measured in dollars and cents .
The impact of these volunteers is felt far beyond the shop .
As Baptist Health ’ s Sara Stringfield eloquently put it , “ As healthcare providers , we say physicians are called to do the work in healthcare . These volunteers are healthcare providers , too . They ’ re called to that same mission . It may look a little different than what caregivers are doing at the bedside , but they ’ re taking care of our patients and visitors every day . They listen to our patients , they support them , encourage them , and our staff too .”
Volunteering at the gift shop is more than just a way to pass the time ; it ’ s a serious commitment . Prospective volunteers , often referred by others who know their character , undergo the same background checks and orientation as regular hospital employees . This process underscores the importance of their role and the trust placed in them .
Reflecting on her time in the shop , Jane Land smiled warmly , “ I know everybody in the hospital .”
It ’ s clear that her presence , along with that of the other volunteers , is felt deeply by everyone who encounters them . They are the heart of the hospital , offering not just gifts , but comfort , connection , and care to all who need it .
