After extensive protests and petitions from the people who worked with her, the Ames office yielded, but on one condition: Williams had to go back to school.
“[ This was ] the time before cellphones, so they went to Ames, they called him, they sent letters and finally, he said to my superior, ' Call your people off,’” Williams said.“‘ She can stay, but she better go to college and not fiddle around.’”
Williams received her bachelor’ s degree from Simpson College in 1991 at age 55. She had to do her computer class on a typewriter, but for the most part, it wasn’ t too difficult. However, there was one class that gave her trouble.
“ All the classes were fairly easy for me— except chemistry. I see no good out of chemistry,” Williams said.“ How’ s that going to help me with 4-Hers? But I had to take it, so I did.”
But college classes— even chemistry— were a walk in the park next to her previous battles.
