Teddy bears are peeking out from windows throughout Winsted, including at the Herald Journal. ON AVERAGE, AARP MEMBERS ENJOY $ 449 * * SAVINGS SUBMITTED PHOTO Counting teddy bears in Winsted KATHY ANDERSON Herald Journal staff We’re all getting a touch of cabin fever, due to the latest stay-at-home order from the state, but we are encouraged to get outside and get some exercise. Children are especially prone to feeling trapped, as the weather warms and the outdoors beckons. On a suggestion from a local radio station, our Winsted neighborhood social media group has or- ganized a bear hunt to keep kids (and their elders) entertained during their daily perambulations. Residents are encouraged to put teddy bears in the front windows of their homes for children to count. Not having a stuffed animal in my house for some years, I suggested that my (live) dog – who often sits on the back of the couch looking out the front window for anything moving at which she can bark – could substitute. I was told it would work if I put a sign around her neck stating, “I am a teddy bear.” My schnauzer refused to cooperate. Next, I offered my husband as a possible proxy. This was disallowed; although he has the physique, he does not have the temperment. I will pick up an ac- tual stuffed bear on my next shopping trip, when I check out the supply of toilet paper. I thought this was an excellent way to put a little humor into the lives of the little ones. I think it would be a great idea for the whole city to display their teddys for the duration of the stay-at- home order. It could be our sign of solidarity, and hope in an otherwise dreary stretch of time. Join the bear hunt in Winsted.
