A celebration of our history
A
ccording to Punxsutawney Phil,
the rotund rodent meteorologist,
Spring is just around the corner
– he must be right, because evidence
can be seen all across the area in flowers
springing from the dirt, prompted by a
continual deluge of rainfall, and the crisp
air of changing seasons.
With that in mind, this edition of
Selma The Magazine turns its eye toward
those things that make Spring a revital-
izing time of year — the return of family
traditions, the allure of sweet treats, the
changing of guards and the call of art
and culture.
Reporter James Jones ventured over
to Hogg-Stone Engineering to check in
with Meredith Hogg-Stone, a third-gen-
eration Selma engineer now running her
own business alongside her father.
Reporter Brannon Cahela checked in
with a local maker baking up batches
of fresh cookies to be hocked across the
county and wandered over to the Selma
Art Guild to find out what makes Dallas
County such a hotbed of creative activ-
ity.
We also chatted with Henry Brick Co.
President Davis Henry about his com-
pany’s 75th anniversary and the ups and
downs that have dotted its history since
4 • SELMA THE MAGAZINE
its founding in 1945.
We also hear from Carl Bowline, a
man that wears many hats in the com-
munity, about growing up in Selma and
what makes the Queen City so special
and unique— for him, much of it con-
nects back to his family, both the one
that raised him and the one he’s cur-
rently raising.
Taken together, these stories take an
unconventional approach to celebrating
the arrival of Spring — what might seem
like a business feature is in fact the tale
of families persevering across decades
to build a life in Selma; what appears to
be an article on a local organization is in
fact a celebration of the artistic spirit that
permeates every corner of our region;
what looks like a piece on fresh-baked
cookies is in fact … a celebration of
fresh-baked cookies.
We hope you’ll enjoy reading these
articles as much as we enjoyed writing
them and getting to know the people
that make them a part of our collective
history.
