STATION 1 Corozo Trail 1. Food and Shelter As you walk, look for large, red palm leaves. You will find the plant that gives name to the trail: the Corozo (Welfia regia). This is one of the 27 species of palm found in Tirimbina. Palms give structure to the tropical forest and are more abundant in mature forests. Their fruits attract large birds like toucans, turkeys, and golden orioles, while some hummingbirds nest in the leaves of Toucan the smaller palms. Keel-billed toucan Did you know…palms also benefit people. People use palm leaves to weave roofs and extract hearts of palm from the stems of many different species.
