STATION 1
Corozo Trail
1. Food and Shelter
As you walk, look for large, red palm
leaves. You will find the plant that gives
name to the trail: the Corozo (Welfia regia).
This is one of the 27 species of palm
found in Tirimbina.
Palms give structure to the tropical forest
and are more abundant in mature forests.
Their fruits attract large birds
like toucans, turkeys,
and golden orioles, while
some hummingbirds nest
in the leaves of
Toucan
the smaller palms.
Keel-billed toucan
Did you know…palms also benefit people.
People use palm leaves to weave roofs and
extract hearts of palm from the stems of
many different species.
