September ...

Do you remember ?”

By Christopher Harris SEKY Magazine Editor
Ah , the good ol ’ days . For each one of us , that means something different . For me , it was the ‘ 80s and ‘ 90s , when I was a kid . We ’ d play in the street until sundown , ride our bikes all over town — no parental supervision necessary — and had never heard of anything called “ the Internet ”; I took a computer class as a pre-teen where basically the goal was to successfully print out a cookbook on a dot matrix printer .
The world has certainly changed since then , and I ’ ll leave it to mouths other than my own to declare whether things have gotten better or worse , or both somehow . What I do know is that the memories that I made back then were incredibly special , and I spent a lot of time revisiting them — revisiting the places I knew , the people I was around , and the things I could do back during a time that , for me at least , was much simpler .
The theme of this edition of Southeast Kentucky Magazine is nostalgia . We all have it . We all treasure some of it . We can all understand it .
In this community , Somernites Cruise is the ultimate celebration of nostalgia for days gone by . With its classic cars and omnipresent 1950s soundtrack , attending a show is like taking a step back in time in many ways . David Godsey spoke to SEKY about this interest of his and his own beloved “ blast from the past ” automobile .
Elsewhere in this edition , local history buff Gib Gosser takes us back to the Somerset of yesteryear . We look at the history of Burnside ’ s iconic 7 Gables Motel , and recall the fun of Little League baseball at Cole Park .
We visit a business that makes a trade out of nostalgia , in the form of antiques , and talk to two local musicians who have tried to bring the age of the coffeehouse to modernday Somerset . And we fondly remember the late Jeff Perkins , a local legend in sports and education who recently passed away .
All that and much more is featured in this month ’ s SEKY Magazine . Sit back , relax , read and remember .
