Ask the Readers

Those were the good ol ’ days ...

By Carla Slavey

Reader ’ s Poll :

What era do readers want to return to ?

Some of us long to return to the days of our childhood – when summers were simpler , friends were easily found , and things just seemed to work the way they were supposed to . Others dream of visiting a time before they were born – whether it be the Roaring ‘ 20s with the popularization of jazz , the style and energy of “ flappers ” or the boom in architecture – or the ‘ 60s with its “ Summer of Love ” and birth of the hippie movement .
The truth is , we often see the good in those “ good ol ’ days ” while missing other milestones distinctive to those eras . Take the end of the 20s , for example , with its Great Depression , or the start of the Vietnam war in the ‘ 60s .
The concept of “ rose colored glasses ” was created for a reason , after all . And looking back , we tend to romanticize the good while ignoring the bad .
What , then , do SEKY readers see as “ the good ol ’ days ?” Maybe it should come as no surprise with the average age of the Commonwealth Journal ’ s readership that the overwhelming consensus for the award for “ best decade ” went to the 1970s . Even those of us – like the writer of this paragraph – who mainly grew up in the ‘ 80s find the music , style and games of the ‘ 70s to be pretty far out ( that ’ s good , for you youngsters ).
Below are a selection of answers to SEKY ’ s Facebook poll question for September : What time period is “ the good ol ’ days to you ?”
