The fountain is missing today , though Brandon Becker of the Burnside Historical Society said he ’ d gladly pay $ 1,000 to get it back .
Burnside itself has a proud and culturally significant history . Originally named Point Isabel , the town was renamed after Civil War General Ambrose Burnside in 1890 , following the general ’ s establishment of a camp there . Between the steamboats along the Cumberland River and the busy Southern Railway , Burnside was an industrial shipping hub , and a major international lumber provider .
The Seven Gables Hotel was originally built and owned by John R . Golden . His great-niece , Joanne Golden Hill , said that he owned so much local property , lore has it that Burnside ’ s status as a “ town ” was compromised , and had to start selling things off .
“ He was the banker , the postmaster ,” said Hill . “ He owned everything .”
Golden sold the building in 1920 ,
