Sadly , in 2021 , the longtime furniture store closed its doors and sat empty for about a year . However , this would not be the end for this special place for Somerset locals .
Todd Clayton saw the potential for this location and had a vision for Somerset . A hub , just like in years past , but this time for local “ makers ” to showcase their own work in the windows and building , still the talk of the town and expanding the pieces showcased beyond furniture .
That vision has become the Makers Mill .
Showcased pieces include paintings , macramé , candles , handmade soaps , metalworking , and vintage upscaled furniture and so much more .
The building was large enough to accommodate affordably rentable studio space for local artists and creators .
“ The upstairs had a plaster ceiling . One of the coolest things during the construction was finding all the timber that made up the ceiling structure ,” Clayton said . “ We demo ’ ed that and gained a large amount of headroom , making the large upstairs room even bigger .”
Clayton ’ s idea became a hope for many others in the community , who stepped in to make the space a reality before the doors ever opened to the public .
Onlookers were curious throughout the process about what was happening in the space . Cars would slow down to get a peek of the latest improvements to the space and those who walked by often asked questions on what was happening to the familiar building .
In mid-July , Clayton ’ s vision became a reality . The Makers Mill opened its doors to the public .
The place was hopping with local music , people , and the creations of locals . Doors and windows wide open , spreading the awareness that this special place was once again thriving .
Repurposed pieces from the building were integrated in the new design of the the Makers Mill entrance from wood from the ceilings of the original
structure .
“ With a true maker mentality , we have used that lumber everywhere . Basically everything you see that is wood on the building came from upstairs ,” Clayton said . “ The front , the exterior columns , the windows ( which we made and are replacing over time ) are all made from that wood . It ’ s hard and brittle , lots of nails to pull , but when it ’ s cleaned up it ’ s beautiful .”
The Makers Mill is officially open for business , showcasing local Makers ’ work . One can check out what ’ s happening in this space Thursdays through Saturdays , 12 p . m . to 10 p . m . and on Sundays , 12 p . m to 6 p . m .
“ All in all , the building was a huge shell full of beauty . To know the building held many people over time who dedicated many years to the aesthetic of home design and the craft of furniture is a tradition we hope to carry ,” said Clayton . “ Although our model in form and function is different , the spirit of the people and building remains .”
Just like in years past , you may leave this local space with a piece so special , it is showcased in your family ’ s home for years to come .
