suicide .
Similar to risk factors that can make a suicide attempt more likely to occur , there are also a range of factors that can protect against suicide . These include : connectedness to others , including at school and in the community , being able identify a reason for living ( family , friends , pets , etc ), having a positive self – esteem , developing effective coping and problem solving skills , having support from partners , friends and family , and access to behavioral health care . Everyone can help prevent suicide , and we can all do our part to support people and help protect them from suicidal thoughts and behavior .
Know the warning signs : If someone is at risk for suicide , you can watch for warning signs , including :
• Talking about being a burden , being isolated , increased anxiety , behaving recklessly , expressing hopelessness , talking about or posting about wanting to die , sleeping too little or too much , increased substance use , anger or rage , extreme mood swings , withdrawing or socially isolating , or making plans for suicide .
• Talking about wanting to die or kill oneself , looking for a way ( such as searching or obtaining a gun ) or talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live should prompt you to take immediate action to get help . The other warning signs can indicate a serious risk – especially if the behavior is new , has increased , and / or seems related to a painful event , loss or change .
Do You or Someone You Know Need Help ?
There are several resources available to provide education and referral in times of crisis :
On July 16 , 2022 , the federally mandated crisis number , 988 , went live for all landline and cell phones users . 988 provides a single three-digit number to access a network of over 200 local and state funded crisis centers . 988 callers who are suicidal or experiencing a mental health
crisis will be routed to the national suicide prevention lifeline and connected to a crisis counselor where they may receive crisis counseling , resources and referrals , and in some cases where available , mobile crisis units may be dispatched . 988 is not meant to replace 911 , which will still be used to access fire and emergency medical assistance . Services are available 24 / 7 , are free and confidential . By dialing 988 and selecting option 1 , you can also access the Veterans Crisis Line .
